Adverse Weather

Every winter brings the possibility of snow and ice. Extreme bad weather can cause widespread and prolonged disruption. Schools are often affected and it can be difficult to maintain an education service. During extreme weather our aim is to keep school open wherever possible, whilst ensuring the safety of our children and staff.

We recognise that it is important our school remains open so parents are able to work and pupils can continue to learn. Our Lady of the Rosary Catholic Primary School will make every effort to prepare for severe snow/ice this winter.

I hope the following information will reassure parents about how any decisions to close school are made. In the event of light snow, we may offer an extended registration period to enable children to arrive safely and ease congestion on the surrounding roads. If the snow is heavy, then we may open school later in the morning to allow staff time to arrive. In extreme snow, where staff are unable to reach school we may need to close the school.

Whatever decisions are taken will be communicated in the following ways:

  1. The school website will be updated regularly.
  2. Messages will be sent on email and/or by text message.
  3. The school Facebook account will be updated regularly.

Thank you for your understanding when there are snowy conditions. Please be assured that any decision to close school is taken after very careful consideration, and our aim at all times is to remain open as usual.

What can you do to help?

  • If you are a working parent or feel you may have a problem with a sudden earlier pick up, please could you put a backup plan in place with another family member or parent and inform the school. This will allow staff to leave earlier for their safety if weather dictates.
