Year 2

Welcome to Our Lady of the Rosary Year 2!
Year 2 is an exciting and purposeful year where children deepen their learning, strengthen their independence, and prepare for their transition into Key Stage 2. We believe every child is full of God-given potential, and in Year 2 we nurture this through a rich curriculum, high expectations, and an encouraging, supportive learning environment. Children develop confidence as thinkers, problem-solvers, readers, writers, and members of our school community.
Our Learning Environment
The Year 2 classroom is an inviting and well-structured space where children feel confident to engage with increasingly challenging learning. The environment is designed to promote independence and to help children take responsibility for their work, their resources, and their learning choices. Adults model clear explanations, guide children through new ideas, and encourage them to approach challenges with resilience and curiosity. Displays, resources, and routines support children to think deeply, stay organised, and feel proud of their achievements.
How We Support Learning
Year 2 follows a carefully sequenced curriculum that builds on prior learning while introducing new concepts in a structured and engaging way. Lessons are designed to help children revisit key ideas, make connections across subjects, and develop secure understanding.
Our core learning includes:
- Little Wandle Phonics, taught during the autumn term to consolidate and strengthen decoding and blending as children prepare to move on to spelling.
- Little Wandle Spelling, introduced in the spring term, supporting children to apply spelling patterns and rules with increasing accuracy.
- White Rose Maths, helping children develop secure understanding of number, calculation, fractions, shape, measure, and reasoning through clear small steps and practical resources.
- A broad, knowledge-rich curriculum including science, history, geography, art, design technology, computing, music, and PE.
- Regular opportunities for discussion, extended writing, independent reading, and meaningful problem-solving.
We continue to use SOLO taxonomy to help children recognise how their thinking can progress from simple recall to increasingly sophisticated understanding. Through modelling, reflective talk, and worked examples, children learn how to build on prior knowledge and deepen their reasoning.
Learning is supported through guided groups, targeted intervention where needed, visual scaffolds, high-quality modelling, and responsive feedback that helps children take their next steps confidently.
Personal, Social, and Emotional Development
Year 2 is an important year for developing maturity, confidence, and independence. Children learn how to work collaboratively, manage challenges positively, and express their thoughts and feelings respectfully. Staff support children to develop resilience, responsibility, and empathy, fostering a classroom community where every child feels valued and listened to.
Religious Education in Year 2
RE is central to our curriculum. Children explore Gospel stories, the life and teachings of Jesus, the sacraments, and key celebrations of the liturgical year. They reflect on how faith guides our words, actions, and choices, and they grow in understanding of prayer, reflection, and the values that shape our Catholic community. Through discussion, story, and simple theological thinking, children deepen their understanding and sense of belonging.
Partnership With Parents and Carers
We are committed to working closely with families. Each week, parents/carers receive a Google Classroom update outlining the key learning for the week, helpful vocabulary, and suggestions for supporting learning at home. These updates help families stay informed and confident in supporting their child’s progress.
We also welcome conversations, invite parents/carers to view children’s work, and celebrate achievements throughout the year.
Faith Life in Year 2
Faith is woven through daily classroom life. Children take part in regular prayer, moments of quiet reflection, and simple acts of worship that help them grow in awareness of God’s presence. They join whole-school liturgies, celebrations, and charitable activities, deepening their understanding of Gospel values and their role within our Catholic community.
A Place to Grow
Year 2 is a year of new challenges, increasing independence, and growing confidence. Children build strong foundations in reading, writing, and mathematics while developing knowledge and curiosity across a wide range of subjects. Our aim is for every child to leave Year 2 feeling confident, motivated, and ready for the opportunities and responsibilities of Key Stage 2.White Rose - resources for parents/carers
