To the Ends of the Earth - Branch 5

Go therefore and make disciples of all nations.
Matthew 28:19

During this branch of Religious Education, pupils explore the events that follow Jesus’ Resurrection and Ascension, focusing on the coming of the Holy Spirit and the mission of the early Church. To the Ends of the Earth reflects the moment when the disciples are sent out to share the Good News, and the Church begins its mission to the world, guided by the Holy Spirit.

Across the school, pupils encounter key Scripture stories such as the Road to Emmaus, the Ascension, and Pentecost, as well as the work of the apostles, particularly Peter and Paul, in building the early Christian community. Through these stories, children learn that the Church was formed through the power of the Holy Spirit and that Christians today continue this mission through prayer, service, and community.

Teaching in this branch develops progressively. Younger pupils learn about the Holy Spirit as a friend and helper, and begin to understand that the Church is a family that gathers to pray and care for one another. As pupils move through the school, they explore deeper themes such as the role of the apostles, the structure and mission of the Church, the Sacrament of Confirmation, and the gifts and fruits of the Holy Spirit. They learn how the life of the Church today is rooted in the events of Pentecost and the work of the early Christians.

Throughout To the Ends of the Earth, Religious Education helps pupils understand that the Church is not just a building, but a worldwide community called to continue the work of Jesus. Pupils are encouraged to reflect on how the Holy Spirit guides Christians to live with courage, kindness, and faith, and how they too are called to share God’s love with others in their daily lives. The branch helps pupils to see that the mission of the Church, which began with the apostles, continues today in every Christian community around the world.
