Catholic Social Teaching reminds us that we are one human family, whatever our national, cultural or economic differences. Solidarity calls us to recognise that the suffering or injustice experienced by others is our own concern and that we are responsible for one another. Working for peace means promoting reconciliation, justice and understanding so that all people can live in harmony. To live in solidarity is to stand alongside our brothers and sisters everywhere, building relationships of respect and care and working together for a world where the dignity of every person is protected and where peace can truly flourish.
‘The paths of peace are paths of solidarity, for no one can be saved alone. We live in a world so interconnected that, in the end, the actions of each person affect everyone.’
Pope Francis
‘Live in harmony with one another. Do not be proud, but associate with those in need.’
Romans 12:16
At Our Lady of the Rosary we seek to build solidarity and peace through prayer, action and learning. Each September the whole school takes part in a walk for the World Day of Migrants and Refugees, standing with people forced to leave their homes and reminding ourselves that we are one global family. Pupils write to our local MP about social justice issues, learning that their voices can influence change and promote fairness in society. Through our ongoing support of CAFOD we help communities around the world affected by poverty, conflict and climate change, showing that our concern reaches far beyond our local area. Our school also nurtures reconciliation and friendship through playground buddies, anti-bullying ambassadors and the buddy bench, helping children to experience peace and unity in daily school life. These experiences teach our pupils that working for peace and standing in solidarity with others are central to living out the Gospel.
