Racial Justice, Equality and Diversity (RJED)

God does not discriminate: each person is equally called and valued and no-one can escape his infinite love and mercy. He is also fair and unbiased, protecting his people, especially those who are disadvantaged or suffering.

Racial Justice, Equality and Diversity in Sacred Scripture, Diocese of Westminster

“Love one another, share with those in need, live in peace.“

Romans 12: 9-18

“God created all people in His image."

Genesis 1:26-31

Racial Justice, Equality and Diversity (RJED)

At Our Lady of the Rosary Catholic Primary School, we are committed to fostering a community where every individual is valued, respected, and loved. Implicit in this commitment is the principle of inclusion recognising that we are all equal members of a diverse community, bound together by mutual respect and the love of God.

The love of God who created each of us in His image and loves us uniquely and unconditionally forms the foundation of this initiative. Guided by our Catholic faith, we strive to oppose racism and promote racial equity in every aspect of our school’s ethos, curriculum, and daily practice.

Christ’s command to “love your neighbour” extends to all people, regardless of race, ethnicity, culture, or background. As disciples of Christ, we are called to ensure that every member of our school community is treated with dignity, fairness, and respect.

We actively challenge bias, discrimination, and stereotyping, as well as any conduct prohibited by the Equality Act 2010, that may lead to racial injustice or inequality. Our goal is to embed anti-racist practices across all areas of school life, creating an environment where every child and adult feels a true sense of belonging.

Rooted in Catholic social teaching, we recognise that the promotion of human dignity is fundamental to our mission. We aim to educate our pupils to discern what is unjust and to celebrate our shared humanity as children of God.

By addressing the cumulative effects of past and present inequities, we seek to remove barriers and ensure that all our pupils can flourish. This is achieved through the education of the whole person - heart, mind, and spirit - across the whole curriculum.

As an expression of Christ’s love, we nurture a vibrant, inclusive community that embraces diversity and promotes equality of opportunity for all. Together, we celebrate the differences that enrich and unite us.

Our RJED Pledge

We pledge to:

  • Work together to ensure that all differences are recognised and celebrated.

  • Promote and support racial justice, equality, and diversity in every aspect of our Catholic life.

  • Act responsibly and show an inclusive attitude whenever and wherever we encounter injustice.

  • Inspire our children to value and practise racial justice, equality, and diversity.

  • Teach our children that every human being is created equally in the image of God.

RJED is embedded throughout our curriculum, reflecting our ongoing commitment to creating a just, inclusive, and loving school community.

Promoting Spiritual, Moral, Social and Cultural Growth

At Our Lady of the Rosary Catholic Primary School, we are dedicated to nurturing our pupils’ spiritual, moral, social and cultural development, with a particular focus on promoting equality and diversity for all as children of God.

We provide a safe, inclusive and inspiring learning environment where pride in achievement, teamwork, respect and trust are at the heart of all we do. Our intent is for every pupil to grow into a person of compassion, empathy, respect and kindness  to aspire, believe and achieve  and our curriculum is carefully designed to reflect these values.

We value and celebrate the richness of our culturally diverse community and have shaped our curriculum to help children develop a strong sense of identity, a deep understanding of others, and an awareness of the love of Christ that embraces all, regardless of race, religion or culture. Guided and strengthened by our patron saint, Our Lady of the Rosary, these values permeate every aspect of school life.

RJED across our curriculum

Our commitment to racial justice and diversity runs through the whole curriculum. In every subject, we look for opportunities to help pupils understand the richness of different cultures, challenge unfairness, and recognise the dignity of every person.

In RE, pupils learn how faith calls us to value one another and to stand up for what is right. In English, history and the wider humanities, children encounter diverse voices, global perspectives and stories that deepen their understanding of the world. In art, music and PSHE, pupils explore identity, culture and community in ways that build confidence and respect.

Across all subjects, we encourage pupils to question injustice, celebrate difference, and understand that their choices can make a positive impact. This whole-curriculum approach helps us build a school where every child feels seen, valued and included.

Catholic Social Teaching

Catholic Social Teaching shapes the way we help pupils understand dignity, fairness and respect for every person. These principles are woven through our RE curriculum and wider personal development work so that pupils see faith as something lived out through how we treat one another.

We explore themes such as human dignity, justice, participation, and care for those in need. Through these, pupils learn that every person has inherent worth and that we are called to challenge injustice and value diversity within our school and wider community.

“God is present in every human person, regardless of religion, culture, nationality, orientation or economic standing. Each one of us is unique and beautiful. We are called to treat every person and every creature with loving respect.”
 CAFOD

Using scripture, discussion and partnerships with charitable organisations, we support children in understanding that faith leads us to act with compassion and to recognise the dignity of all people. This forms an important part of our commitment to racial justice and a welcoming, inclusive school environment.

Throughout the year, we explore different Gospel Values that guide how we treat one another and how we live out our mission as a Catholic school. These values teach pupils that caring for our world, valuing every human life, and acting with fairness and courage are responsibilities we all share.

Through prayer, reflection and practical action, we encourage children to live the Gospel message each day: to recognise what is right, to speak up for others, to show love through service, and to help build a school community where faith, respect and joy are at the centre of our relationships
