State Opening of Parliament

Pupil Parliament at Our Lady of the Rosary

Promoting Democracy, Responsibility and Pupil Voice

At Our Lady of the Rosary, our Pupil Parliament is an important expression of how we live out the British Values of democracy, mutual respect, individual liberty and tolerance. It provides children with a meaningful and structured way to contribute to school life, influence decisions and understand how democratic processes work in the wider world.

Through Pupil Parliament, children learn that their voices matter. They develop confidence, responsibility and leadership, and they gain practical experience in listening to others, sharing ideas and representing the views of their classmates. It is an active and vibrant part of school life where pupils feel empowered to help shape the community they belong to.

Democracy in Action: Pupil Parliament Elections

Each Autumn, during UK Parliament Week, our school holds its annual Pupil Parliament elections. Pupils in Years 1 to 6 are invited to stand for election by creating a short manifesto, written or recorded on video, explaining what they stand for and why they would make a strong representative.

On election day, each class visits our specially created polling station, complete with authentic voting booths and ballot papers. Every child casts their vote privately, experiencing a real democratic process and learning about fairness, equality and representation.

Once the votes are counted, our new Members of Pupil Parliament (MPPs) start their term of office with an introductory meeting where they learn about their responsibilities and the committees they will serve on.

Our Pupil Parliament Committees

The Pupil Parliament is made up of six committees. Each one focuses on a different area of school life and gives children the opportunity to take part in purposeful leadership, problem-solving and decision-making.

Catholic Life Committee

This committee works to nurture the distinctive ethos of our school. Members support collective worship, help lead charitable outreach, and promote kindness, respect and service across the school. They share ideas on how we can continue to reflect our values in everyday life and help ensure that every child feels included and supported.

Stewardship Committee

Focusing on care for the environment, this committee encourages everyone to play their part in looking after our school and local area. They promote recycling, energy saving, litter-free spaces and sustainable choices. They collaborate on projects that help children understand their responsibility to protect creation for the future.

Well-being Committee

This committee plays an important role in championing positive relationships and emotional well-being. They explore ways to strengthen friendships, support inclusion, and help children feel safe and valued. Members offer suggestions for improving playtimes, celebrating kindness and ensuring everyone has someone to talk to.

One World Committee

Members of the One World Committee explore global citizenship. They bring attention to world events, cultural diversity and fairness. This committee leads projects that help pupils understand different perspectives, celebrate the richness of our diverse world and think about how small actions can contribute to positive change beyond our school.

Resolution Committee

Focusing on listening and communication, this committee gathers pupils’ views, identifies common concerns and helps find ways forward. Members practise respectful debate, share balanced viewpoints and help the Parliament explain decisions clearly. They play an important role in building a school culture where pupils learn to resolve differences constructively.

Outdoor Learning Committee

This committee is responsible for helping to improve and champion the use of our outdoor spaces. Members work on developing ideas for gardening, outdoor play, environmental projects and learning opportunities that take place outside the classroom. They help ensure that outdoor learning remains accessible, well-resourced and enjoyable for all children.

The Role of Pupil Parliament in School Life

Our Pupil Parliament is an active, highly visible part of school life. Representatives meet regularly to discuss ideas, make suggestions and contribute solutions that improve the daily experiences of all pupils. They collaborate with staff, lead assemblies, gather feedback from their peers and help shape school initiatives across the year.

The Parliament also plays a role in linking the school with the wider community. This year, for example, members met with our local Spelthorne MP, Lincoln Jopp, to ask questions about leadership, representation and public service. Experiences like this help pupils understand how democracy works beyond school and how their own voices fit into a wider society.

Through their work, members gain valuable skills in communication, organisation and teamwork. Pupil Parliament enables every child to see themselves as an active citizen, someone who can contribute positively to the school, the community and the world around them.
