Playtimes at Our Lady of the Rosary

Our Playtimes

Playtimes at Our Lady of the Rosary are an important and valued part of the school day. We believe that active, creative and joyful play helps children to build friendships, develop confidence and return to learning feeling refreshed and ready. Our approach is shaped by the OPAL (Outdoor Play and Learning) ethos, ensuring that every child experiences high-quality play, every day.

Our OPAL Approach

Through OPAL, children enjoy a rich variety of play experiences, including construction and loose-part play, imaginative role play, outdoor creativity and opportunities for physical challenge. We embrace the principle that there is no such thing as bad weather, only bad clothing, encouraging children to enjoy the outdoors throughout the year.

A Wide Range of Play Spaces

Children can choose from a variety of well-planned areas each playtime, including:

  • Tennis courts

  • Climbing and adventure equipment

  • Designated zones for imaginative and creative play

  • A calm, welcoming library space open at lunchtime

This variety means there is always something suitable for every child, whether they want to move, explore, build, read or play with friends.

Sports Clubs and Active Opportunities

A strong programme of lunchtime sports clubs supports healthy, active lifestyles. These are open to children across the school and include:

  • Running club

  • Basketball

  • Seasonal sports and skills-focused activities

These clubs develop teamwork, stamina and confidence, and form an important part of our wider playtime offer.

Sports Crew Leadership

Our Sports Crew are trained pupil leaders who help to organise games, support younger children and promote active play. They take responsibility for equipment, lead warm-ups and introduce simple games that encourage teamwork and fairness. They are excellent role models and contribute significantly to our positive play culture.

Pupil Parliament Committees Supporting Playtimes

Our Pupil Parliament plays a central role in shaping playtimes and ensuring that every child’s voice is heard. Three committees are particularly active during break and lunchtimes:

Outdoor Learning Committee

This committee gathers pupil voice on how to further develop our outdoor spaces and OPAL provision. They suggest new resources, highlight areas that need improvement and help staff plan future developments. Their ideas contribute directly to creating exciting, inclusive and well-used play areas.

Resolution Committee

Members of this committee help children navigate friendship worries with confidence and care. They encourage kind choices, help peers talk through small concerns and promote our anti-bullying message across the school. They often lead kindness challenges and Friendship Week activities, helping playtimes feel calm, supportive and positive.

Wellbeing Committee

The Wellbeing Committee focuses on ensuring that every child feels included and secure during playtimes. They look out for anyone who is unsure where to go or who to play with, help to welcome children into games and activities, and suggest improvements to make lunchtimes feel happier and more settled for everyone.

A Playtime for Everyone

Together, OPAL, staff-led activities, sports opportunities and our Pupil Parliament committees help us create playtimes that are inclusive, joyful and purposeful. Whether children want to run, read, explore, build or connect with others, there is always a space for them at Our Lady of the Rosary.
