How can I help my child?

As children grow, they develop a wide range of skills - academic, social, emotional, physical, and practical. Every child progresses at their own rate, and there is no single pathway. However, small, consistent experiences at home can make a significant difference to their confidence and success in school.

This section brings together practical, accessible guidance to help you support your child.
Each page focuses on a particular area of development and offers:

  • Clear explanations of key ideas
  • Simple activities you can try at home
  • Supportive language and conversation prompts
  • Strategies that complement what is taught in school
  • Signposting to useful websites and resources

Our aim is to help families feel informed and confident in supporting learning beyond the classroom. The guidance reflects approaches used in school and is rooted in research-informed practice, so that home and school can work in partnership.

This resource is not intended as a checklist or a set of expectations. You can explore the topics that feel most relevant to your child, and adopt ideas at a pace that suits your family.

Each topic includes:

  • Why this area matters
  • Practical home-based strategies
  • Helpful language to use with children
  • How school supports this area
  • Sources of further information

You may find it helpful to revisit these pages as your child develops, as many strategies can be adapted for different ages and stages. Even small changes to everyday routines and interactions can have a positive impact.

Most importantly, you know your child well. These suggestions are intended to complement your understanding, and to strengthen the partnership between home and school so that every child can thrive.
