English at Our Lady of the Rosary

At Our Lady of the Rosary, we believe that language is central to learning, communication and personal development. Our English curriculum gives children the tools to read with enjoyment, write with purpose and speak with confidence. Through exposure to high-quality texts, rich discussion and opportunities to write for real audiences, pupils develop the knowledge, skills and creativity they need to flourish.

Our Approach to Teaching English

English is taught through a carefully sequenced curriculum that supports children to develop strong skills in reading, writing, speaking and listening. Learning builds progressively from the Early Years through to Year 6, ensuring smooth transition at each stage.

High-quality children’s literature sits at the heart of our approach. Teachers select engaging texts that expose children to rich vocabulary, diverse voices and ambitious ideas. Reading and writing are taught in meaningful contexts so children understand how language shapes and communicates meaning.

We expect all pupils to take pride in their English work and to present it clearly, reflecting high expectations and care.

Reading, Writing and Language Development

Early reading is built on secure foundations in phonics. Children learn to decode accurately and apply their skills to develop fluency, confidence and understanding. Reading continues to be explicitly taught throughout Key Stage 2 so pupils deepen comprehension, develop independence and broaden their reading experiences.

Writing is taught through a structured approach that develops transcriptional skills (spelling and handwriting) alongside composition. Children learn to plan, draft, revise and publish writing for different purposes and audiences. Grammar and punctuation are taught within context to support accuracy and control.

Vocabulary is taught explicitly and revisited frequently across the curriculum. Children learn how words work, encounter them repeatedly in varied contexts and are encouraged to use them confidently in speech and writing.

Spoken Language

Oracy underpins learning across the school. Children are taught to speak clearly, listen attentively and respond respectfully. Structured talk supports pupils to reason, debate, reflect and collaborate. Through discussion, presentation, drama and performance, children develop confidence, articulation and the ability to question and explore ideas.

Supporting All Learners

We believe every child can succeed in English. Teaching is adaptive, ensuring that pupils who need additional help receive targeted support through Little Wandle interventions, small-group learning or 1:1 sessions. Challenge is provided for those who are ready to deepen their thinking and extend their skills.

Enrichment

Opportunities across the school enhance children’s experience of English. These include:

  • Author and poet visits
  • Book-themed events
  • Public speaking and performance
  • Reading for pleasure initiatives
  • Whole-school writing projects

Such experiences strengthen children’s understanding of English as a powerful creative and communicative tool.

Continuing the Journey

As children progress through Our Lady of the Rosary, they develop as fluent readers, confident speakers and thoughtful writers. By the time they leave us, pupils have the knowledge, skills and enthusiasm needed to engage with the wider curriculum, enjoy literature and communicate effectively in secondary school and beyond.
