Work is more than a way to earn a living; it is a means of sharing in God’s creation and serving the common good. Catholic Social Teaching teaches that every person has the right to work in conditions that respect their dignity, to receive a fair wage and to be treated with justice and respect. The dignity of work reminds us that people are never simply tools for profit but individuals created in the image of God. We are called to value the contributions of every worker and to ensure that the rights of all—especially those whose work is hidden or undervalued—are protected. By honouring the dignity of workers we build communities that are fair, compassionate and rooted in the Gospel.

"Do not exploit the poor because they are poor and do not crush the needy in court,

for the Lord will take up their case."

(Proverbs 22:22-23)

At Our Lady of the Rosary we teach respect for all professions and encourage children to value fairness and justice in the workplace. During our Mission Week pupils create thank you cards and letters for everyone who works in our school—including the caretaker, office staff, midday supervisors and other support staff—so that their vital contribution is recognised and appreciated. As part of the curriculum, pupils write to our local MP advocating for a fairer society and raising awareness of issues that affect workers, families and communities. Each year we also support Fairtrade Fortnight, helping children to understand the importance of fair pay and safe working conditions around the world. Through these experiences pupils learn that valuing the dignity of workers is an essential way of living out the Gospel.
