Creation and Covenant - Branch 1

Genesis 1:1 - by Chris Jeanguenat from 2011

“In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth… and the Spirit of God was hovering over the waters”

Genesis 1:1–2

Branch One: Creation and Covenant

In this branch, pupils across the school explore the Christian belief that God is the Creator of all things and that Creation is a sign of His love. From the earliest years, children come to know that the world is God's gift and that everything God creates is good. As pupils move through the school, they deepen this understanding through Scripture, including the Creation accounts in Genesis, psalms praising God’s handiwork, and stories of covenant such as Noah and Moses. They learn that the Bible uses symbolic and poetic language to express truths about God, humanity, and the world, and that the Church teaches that Creation is the work of the Holy Trinity. Older pupils also begin to explore how belief in God as Creator sits alongside scientific explanations such as evolution and the Big Bang, recognising that faith and science are not opposed.

Throughout the school, pupils grow in their understanding of covenant: the belief that God enters into loving relationship with humanity. Younger pupils learn about God’s promise to care for His people through stories such as Noah and the rainbow, while older pupils study the covenants with Abraham, Moses, and David, and how Jesus fulfils these covenants. They also encounter key teachings about human dignity, stewardship, and responsibility. As they mature, pupils learn that caring for Creation is one of the ways Christians live out God’s call to love one another, and they connect this with Catholic Social Teaching, including themes such as stewardship, dignity of the human person, and the need to care for our global family.

Prayer and worship run throughout this branch, helping pupils reflect on the beauty of Creation and God’s faithfulness. From making the Sign of the Cross in EYFS to learning psalms, prayers of the Church, and the Nicene Creed in later years, pupils experience the richness of Catholic prayer traditions. They come to see that prayer is a way of drawing close to God and expressing praise and gratitude for His gifts. Across the school, pupils explore how Christians live out their faith by caring for the world, recognising our shared responsibility to protect Creation, and learning from examples of holy men and women whose lives show faith in action.
