God entrusts the earth to our care and calls us to be faithful stewards of His creation. Catholic Social Teaching reminds us that the natural world is a gift to be treasured and protected, not only for ourselves but for future generations. Caring for creation means recognising that the wellbeing of people and the planet are closely connected. It challenges us to live responsibly, reduce waste and use the world’s resources wisely so that all may share in God’s gifts. By respecting and protecting the environment, we respond to the call of the Gospel and show our love for God the Creator.
"The earth is the Lord’s, and everything in it, the world, and all who live in it." (Psalm 24:1)
At Our Lady of the Rosary we put this teaching into action in many practical ways. Our school allotment gives children hands-on experience of growing food and understanding the seasons, while wildflower planting helps to support pollinators and enriches our local environment. The Pupil Parliament’s Stewardship Committee leads many of our eco-initiatives, encouraging the whole school to recycle, save energy and look after the grounds. We work with the Teaboat Project, a community initiative along the banks of the river in Staines, where volunteers help to preserve the beauty of the riverbank. We also support the Talking Tree project in Staines, which brings people together to share ideas for sustainable living. To reduce our carbon footprint we promote walking or scooting to school and provide bike racks and scooter pods to make active travel easier for families. Pupils also take part in community litter picking, showing pride in our local area. Through these activities, our pupils learn that caring for creation is part of our faith and a way to show our love for God and neighbour.
